Machinery safety on a smallholding

By the Furrowgear team · Last checked 21 October 2026

Tractor and PTO safety: Keep PTO shafts fully guarded and never go near a turning shaft. Switch off and remove the key before you get off to adjust anything (HSE Safe Stop). HSE guidance (not an ad)

Quad and UTV safety: Quad bikes cause serious injuries every year. HSE advises training and a suitable helmet for anyone riding one at work. Never carry passengers on a single-seat quad, and never let children ride adult quads. HSE guidance (not an ad)

Blades and cutters: Wear the protective kit the maker specifies (eye, ear and leg protection), keep people and animals well clear, and never put hands near feed rollers or blades.

Furrowgear is an independent UK guide to choosing and running machinery on a smallholding. Every figure is a guide, not a guarantee: check the maker's manual, HSE guidance and GOV.UK. We haven't tested these machines: we compare published specs and official guidance.
